Yesterday I wrote up an exceptionally clean final year E46 M3 equipped with the ZCP package and the SMG transmission. It generated quite a bit of conversation over on German Cars For Sale Blog and so I thought it would be fun to share it here as well.

At $29k this car is by no means cheap but it is incredibly clean and 2006 M3s with the competition package are hard to come by so that somewhat justifies the price. However it doesn’t have that all important third pedal and therein lies the rub. Could you bring yourself to buy one of the all time great BMWs with an manumatic transmission? Would it eat away at your soul every time you got in the car or would the knowledge that you have one of the tightest handing road cars of all time at your disposal be all the comfort you need?

I think the SMG E46 M3 is the cheapest car in the UK with launch control at £5000 and I do like launching cars but still I don't know.

All my cars have manual transmissions, and whenever I look for E46 M3s online, the first box I check is 6-speed,.... but I mean,.... the SMG does blip the throttle on downshifts and it does give you a nice shake on full throttle upshifts. It's not all bad. Could I live with it? Absolutely. Would I spend anything over $15k for a pristine SMG M3,... no. A 6-speed Comp package 2005-2006 E46 M3 is worth this money. Nothing else is.

Yup, I check that same box, then I get frustrated because the majority of them are a.) overpriced or b.) abused/stanced and I end up unchecking it just to see what's out there with the SMG.

I would never get an SMG, even if it was the deal of the century because for me the joy of spirited driving diminishes exponentially when I'm not rowing my own.

Smg’s are okay right up until the moment that SMG pump goes kaput...and it will. When my buddies second pump went bad he said fu*k it and converted it to stick. Worth the extra coin up front for the stick for sure.
